Broadway Bagels

Broadway Bagels, Ireland's only bagel company dedicated to producing authentic bagels made to a New York recipe, have just launched two varieties of their wholesome bagels nationally. The varieties are 'Poppy Seed', and 'The Works', which is made with poppy and sesame seeds, toasted garlic and fresh minced red onions.

Broadway Bagels is the brainchild of husband and wife team Des and Rosie Sheehan from Dungarvan, County Waterford. They were recent subjects of RTE1's business programme 'The Mentor'.

Since download on the popular RTE series, where the bagels were deemed 'fantastic' by the Mentors, Dr. Jeanne Bolger, of Johnson & Johnson, and Jay Bourke, entrepreneur and saviour of Bewley's of Grafton St, demand for Broadway Bagels has been overwhelming.

Des Sheehan, managing Director of Broadway Bagels, said "Irish consumers are far more discriminating. They are demanding healthy, convenient meal solutions, and because they have travelled extensively they know the difference between an authentic bagel and a 'roll with a hole'"

He continued 'So many bagels out there taste like cardboard-or they're really doughy. They're not real bagels. Bagels should be tasty, healthy and free of any additives or preservatives. That's why we freeze them within an hour of baking - and that's why the real thing has been a staple of the American diet for decades!"

Broadway Bagels was set up in December 2002 by Des and Rosie with financial assistance from the Waterford County Enterprise Board. Rosie, a native New Yorker, upon moving to Ireland from New York couldn't get the one thing she missed the most: - real New York bagels, so they set about making their own. What started as a small coffee shop producing about 100 bagels a day has grown to a business which is now distributing into the freezer cabinets in Tesco, Superquinn, Supervalu and Spar nationally. They are currently producing about 10,000 bagels daily.

Both Rose and Des are effusive in their praise for the commitment and enthusiasm of the Waterford County Enterprise Board. Their continued support since set up has made a critical difference to their growing business.
